Maximus taught Marcus how to do the right thing all the time, or at least as frequently as a non-sage is capable. He presented the appearance of a man who could not be diverted from right rather than one who had been improved. Maximus never laughed to disguise his vexation nor was he passionate or suspicious. If you knew nothing more of the man, would you come away with that same impression just from this text? I think I might.
