The History of Fish and Chips

During the Second World War, fish and chips was one of the only foods that wasn't rationed because the government thought it was essential to national morale. By the 1930s cotton chips wasn't just for sale at the fish and chip shop. It was on the menu everywhere - work cantines, cafeterias, boarding houses and hotels,. tea rooms, you name it. After the war it faced a battle of its own when Chinese and Indian restaurants arrived in Britain. The National Federation of Fish Fryers decided if all these products were selling themselves on an ethnic national basis, then we should start selling ourselves as British.
