The UK still has to this day as the same model. There's a licensing fee for TVs on the order of $100 a year. And that money goes to support the BBC, which doesn't have advertising. If it cost me half a cent to read a medium essay or a $2 a month to be a member of Facebook, and that would essentially pay more or less automatically out of a little pool of virtual money with my browser. We could still have individual driven preference, but not influenced by the perverse incentives of advertising.
