I think so often I've heard versions of the terrible thing that has happened to me, or I wish I hadn't done it, or made that choice. And the thing that I have then learned and grown from it is a thing that can make that experience more bearable - not that you would choose to have it but that bringing of the learning into the new experiences. With regret, a lot of the learning comes from trying to reduce shame. So if you've done something that you've regret and anger against yourself as well, and shame is such a restricting emotion that it doesn't really allow you to learn.
