Peter Travers: I first read the book in the 90s and it captured me in a way that a fairy story does or a science fiction novel. It takes you into a world that is almost unimaginable partly because Miss Smeller can see things and translate things and smell things and feel things that other people can't. But the narrative depends on our identification with her. Did you have to change her character? You talked about how it first came to you that she was a woman. Because to me she seemed to change quite a lot when she was on the ship. Yes, you asked deep questions.
