The idea of the artist as hero came under attack in the postmodern period. Beethoven plays that role so perfectly, he overcomes deafness to create great art. But for Bob's modernist heroes like Pound and Joyce, they didn't privilege Beethoven. They weren't very much privileged, Bach above all others.
