The U.S. could default on its debt by as early as June 1st, if a deal is not reached. Republicans in Congress put their foot down and said if they're going to agree to another debt increase, there have to be spending cuts elsewhere. Democrats say the debt limit should not be used for political leverage and won it raise with no strings attached.
