He still seemed to feel that he could think his way out of this or he could breeze his wayout of it so I think that's what really offends maybe the casual observer is this sense of impunity. There had been a series of bank heists around that time organized by the IRA to get the funds and  he felt if he carried out a bank heist it would be blamed on the IRA and he could disappear back to Spain, says John Banville.
