The wall accepts literally anyone and has many different positions. The flowers who shows up on the wall can still make something of himself rising to become a high ranking officer or even Lord Commander. John was mocked for being a bastard on the wall right away, even though it's a place where your past and birth aren't supposed to matter. Even in the very, very first scene, we see way more Royce get a job leading that he didn't deserve because of his family, right? And it wasn't even asked for more much. It just felt like he kind of had to because he wanted to keep committing support from these houses.
