The book explores what individual agency and responsibility look like when there are larger social constraints and structures of power. And so the then explores how this yearning for freedom is at the heart of all the choices and dilemmas faced by the different characters. All of them also have different conceptions of what freedom is and what it takes to realize it, and also who encounter these dilemmas as they navigate different political systems. It fell to me like, you know, i could draw on my life and on the characters that i knew, and of the people i had met, a sort of their life story.
