How Pervasive Is This Problem?
Insecurities are rooted in our evolutionary history. The brain evolved for survival, reproduction and passing on genes. If i think i'm a good dad, i'm implicitly comparing myself to either a model i have in my mind of what a dad should be or other actual dads. And the same thing for if i think of myself as smart or weak, kind or caring - it's all this subtle comparison that these animals do. So we are actually hard wired to be concerned with how we rank in the field compared to others. This is so universal why this is so common? We're not just self-loathing losers who feel insecure about their own selves. It's one of the steps
