CHAPTER

The Benefits of Contracting for Renewable Energy

We can contract for renewables at a fixed price, and we know exactly what we're going to be paying for that as opposed to being exposed to the potentially viable prices in the market from commodity gas prices. We also found that the emissions are reduced. So when we compared annual 100% renewable, our calculations showed that the emissions would be about 155-pound CO2 per megawatt hour. The other additional benefit is there's other long-run emissions benefits during the daytime when we're reducing a lot of solar energy. That excess energy has the effect of turning off additional gas generators that might be on the grid serving other customers.
