The Importance of Rural Idols
Chandrika: Tagore's romantic rural idol is at the heart of some of that poetry. Chandrika, after he came back from London, he's about 20 years old. His father puts him in charge of vast estates which are impoverished and says, go and look after those. He was instructed to collect rent and report on that once a month to his father back home in Calcutta. And this greatly influenced not just his attitude towards rural reconstruction and social reform, particularly amongst the peasantry but also his poetry.
