Venice - The One Cosmopolitan Epicenter
Venice was the one cosmopolitan epicentre where a, the mediaeval west encountered and bought from rest of the world. There was a certain amount of long distance trade and travel in addition to local production for household and village use. But it wasn't always embraced or approved of or encouraged. Commerce was often seen as a threat to that and as a possible de stabilizing force. Mediaevals didn't generally believe in continual economic growth,. They didn't really have a notion of the economy. That's a very odern idea.
