In the mid twentieth century, almost all psychiatrists in private practice used freudian theories and methods. These doctors were analytic and psychological or a p doctors; they spent hours in talk therapy with their patients. On the other hand, most of the doctors who worked in the state hospitals, as asylums had come to be called, were directive and organic, or d o doctors.
