The River of Living Water
In John's gospel we have several references to the opening of a fountain and the flowing out of living water in passages that are almost certainly purposefully alluding to this Old Testament background. The torrents of life flowing out from Jerusalem should be connected with the people fleeing from the condemned city between the mountains. From one perspective they may look like desperate escapees, refugees from a calamity but it is really the chariots of the Lord proceeding to do battle against the nations. We should recognize that the two images belong closely together.
