The Importance of Alkurismi in Islamic Astronomy
Before Alkurismi, most Islamic astronomy followed the Indian rather than Greek tradition. Ptolemy's almajest had been a remarkable achievement based on centuries of observations. The reverence for this work is demonstrated by the title given to it by the Islamic astronomers. A new book written around 830 AD aims to give an updated account of the alMajest. It was written for a broad audience and leaves out most of Ptole my's complex mathematics.
