H.P. Lovecraft said that in a cosmos without absolute values, we have to rely on the relative values affecting our daily sense of comfort, pleasure and emotional satisfaction. He was basing it on his understanding of science and the pessimistic nature that he understood it to be holding. So keep in mind that this is what the vast majority of rational atheists have believed throughout time.
