There are nine criteria in major depressive disorder. If you have five of those for a two-week period, then you can be diagnosed as clank and depressed. The organization of the diagnosis is not some foolproof method that is quantifiable. And it's important for people who might receive that diagnosis to understand sometimes where that comes from.
