What's the best policy to cut car emissions?

Grattan Institute

CHAPTER

Introduction

Cars, eutes and SUVs contribute about 11% of our annual CO2 emissions. Reducing car emissions is a key part of getting Australia to net zero by 2050. A patchwork of policies currently regulates car emissions are not fit for purpose. An emission ceiling places a limit on the average emissions of new vehicles that each manufacturer can sell in a given year. The limit or target would ratchet down each year and ideally would reach zero in 2035.
