The Role of the John Birch Society in the Civil Rights Movement
The John Birch Society was founded in 1958 by Robert Welch of Candy Salesmen, a businessman and 11 other industrialists. The group was designed as the most action oriented effort to root out the alleged communist conspiracy operating inside the United States. It grew from this small group, the small band of mostly business people or wealthy people. They became really a major force for a time as an organization in American politics.
