In more sophisticated societies, the church and the theater became ritual containers. Ritual then didn't change the way people lived, but it was meant to give meaning to life. Human beings' activities were thus connected to the divine. What otherwise beboring drudgery was invested with a meaning that transcended animals' survival. If any of you have ever gone through a ritual where you sacrificed something you loved, you are sacrificing yourself so that you become a sacrifice and sacrifice.
