There have been places and moments when there was briefly an end to pessimism. It may be that the enlightenment has tried to happen countless times, perhaps even all the way back to prehistory. Even so, those many enlightenment put our recent luckiest scapes in stark perspective. But we should feel more than sympathy for those people. We should take it personally. If any of those earlier experiments in optimism had succeeded, our species would be exploring the stars by now,. And you and I would be immortal. Holy shit.
