The four steps of a habit that I like to break it into are queue craving response rewards. If there's some kind of immediate cost to the behavior, then you're likely to avoid it in the future. You want your bad habits to be unenjoyable or to have some kind of cost - especially if it's an immediate cost. With an addiction, you're not learning anymore. And so people who have addictions can't stop themselves from doing something they know doesn't serve them.
