Introduction

In 1933, a young woman named Mary was hospitalized at a sanitarium near Seattle. On the day he signed her death certificate, Charles Firestone sent off a telegram to one of the most prominent research institutions in the world. Today, that museum is now known as the Smithsonian's National Museum of Natural History. In his telegram, Firestone offered something remarkable, Mary's brain. He wrote that if a saw me brain was of interest to the museum, that he could quote, obtain one today. A man named Alice Herdlichke replied the same day. She was an anthropologist and collector of body parts.
