Chalcedonian Christology and the Concept of Pure Nature

Sed Contra: A Podcast of Catholic Theology

CHAPTER

The Divine and Human Natures Are Literally Inconceivable

The mysteries of Christ divine nature and human nature are literally inconceivable or intellectually inaccessible for us unless we are also capable of some form of natural reflection. This argument stated succinctly for this strong claim runs thus. If the human being cannot think naturally about the existence of God and the nature of God as creator then the very idea of the incarnation conceived in calcidonian terms is literally unthinkable. The objective conceptual knowledge in question is derived from reflection on the realities human beings experience, not from infused a priori concepts though such knowledge can eventually reach knowledge attained of things that are causes of the things we experience more directly.
