The Tory Landslide in the Lords Has Its Problems
I wonder that I've got a colleague Ian Dunne who sort of points out that sometimes the Lord's such an effective check on commons legislation precisely because it's not elected. Well, yeah, democracy has its problems but first of all, they say there are people here in the Lords who never stand for election. And anyway, I think that legislatures should have experts to advise them rather than be comprised of experts. There's no reason why they should know any more than I do. So politics has to be a broader ranging thing and therefore I don't like that idea that we should say we're some pretty good experts.
