Breathe Easy Pediatrics Presents: Tidal Volume Episode 6 – RC Time Constants
Breathe Easy
What Is the Unit of Time Constants?
When clinicians talk about long or short time constants, they're typically referring to how slow or fast the lungs of that patient empties. The units of resistance are centimeters of water per liter per second and compliance is liters per centimeter of water. If tau equals r times c, then tau or the time constant will be longer when resistance is higher and or when compliance is higher. Conversely, the time constant is shorter when resistance is lower and or compliance is lower.
