Plato and Socrates are being serious about this whether you or I want to follow them down there. The tone of voice in which you read that whole thing really put a very particular spin on the passage. And apparently these are opportunities for us to cultivate better souls than we started with. It is a repulsive force in the sense of the pulls back, but that's the soul itself attempting to discipline itself. If he weren't disciplining himself he would simply move towards the love object.
