The Conservative Party in All Its Layers
What will the Conservatives be like if they lose the next election and how will they cope with it? Matthew Johnson, as ever, poses a fascinating question. Is there any chance that they could revisit one nation conservatism which frankly has been lost since 1979 in the Tory party? Will they go further to a sort of English nationalist right-wing Trumpite populism or stick with the sort of Sunak-esque Thatcherism? And I don't know the answer. It partly depends on the scale of the defeat if they are defeated. If it's very narrow, I assume Sunak will stay. But even that is not guaranteed if the trauma of being removed for power could trigger all sorts of things.
