The Shocktaw Nation of Louisiana
Since 1955, almost all of the land here has been swallowed up by a combination of rising seas, erosion, and sinking ground. This island used to be home to hundreds of people, mainly from the Shocktaw tribe. Descendants of survivors of the Trail of Tears, who in the 1800s were forced from their homelands by the US government. But today, the worsening effects of climate change have pushed many to leave the island.
