Canfora's 'Four Thousand Scrolls'
Canfora has guessed that the forty thousand scrolls destroyed in caesar's fire were essentially cargo waiting to be loaded on to ships. He thinks it likely that those scrolls were in a storehouse near the dockyards, most likely awaiting export. According to historian alexander still the serapeum apparently held forty two thousand scrolls at its height. This is, of course, forgetting that the big library had a collection that extended to 400 thousand scrolls.
