The Life Risk of Contracting H I V?

H i v originated in chimpanzs an'd likely crossed over to humans through hunters. The lifetime risk of contracting h i v for an an american, gay or bisexual man is 50%. It does sound high. But from what i understand, h i v is human immuno deficiency virus and it infects only immune cells.
