The Composition of Planets Around Other Stars Using Spectroscopic Techniques
Chemistry is not yet capturing people's imagination as much as physics or astrophysics, but you are making a really compelling case for why it should. These techniques are now being used to study the composition of planets in other solar systems - many light years away. If we know that there are planets that have water in their atmospheres, we can hope to find out whether there might be planets with liquid water on their surface.
