The Importance of Herzl's Characteristics
Herzl wasn't all that popular among fellow central and western European Jews especially of the middle classes to which he belongs. He actually found his main support among what he would have called the Osteudan Jews from Eastern Europe who certainly in the minds of many western European Jews were seen as how did I say the somewhat backward perhaps benighted in certain ways. Why was this Herzl seemed to greatly appeal to people who were absolutely nothing like him and whose circumstances and backgrounds he would have had very little sympathy with?
