liberal theology tended to move in two predominant directions. In the late nineteenth century, there was one tradition of liberalism that was very rationalistic. And then you have a kind of more popular strands of liberalism, like this thing called the social gospel. William jennings bryan is often associated with this movement, though of course, he doesn't necessarily fit neatly into it. To some, the social gospel meant a focus on the things of this earth and bettering society at the expense of preaching the gospel.
