The Mycenaean Dynasty on Crete

The rise of a Mycenaean aristocracy was probably stimulated in the first place by the earlier emergence of the palaces on Crete. By about 1400 BC, there were powerful, well-connected kings and elite groups at various places in mainland Greece with interests that extended beyond their immediate vicinities. If you're in Greece, the sea is impossible to avoid; it's often much easier to get around by boat than by traveling overland. It's no surprise that the MyCenaeans had a whole coastal world of small-scale movement, trade, and contact that relied on these landing spots.
