Erin McKinney's defense at trial was the exact opposite. He put on the gay panic defense or tried to. The trial court very much limited how much he was able to do that. Erin McKinney is a big source of their, hey, it wasn't really about him being gay about Matthew Shepard being gay because he's now denying that that's why he killed him. That just shows how much the culture had shifted by that point. It's like we're putting in all these new tropes and like, this is exactly the thing that we're all angry about.
