Buddhism was an oral tradition. None of this was written down for hundreds of years. Lists were a mnemonic device, you know, as a way of teaching and then having the monks and nuns and laypeople who are listening to it. The body is a very apparent lived experience. By practicing mindfulness of the body, until it becomes almost second nature through the repetition of more formal practice, it then becomes much easier to carry mindfulness throughout the day.
