"I don't think he's Kantian. If I implied that I'm misrepresenting it, he goes well beyond Kant," says Hawking. "It has to be something external to merely being beset with some sense data." It would be problematic to say all those colors actually exist in the physical object,. That's one of the problems with saying that a sense data is identical to part of the object... He wants to say colors are real. They're not merely in the mind. They're in the universe.
