Solar physicists have several theories for why the solar atmosphere is so hot. Most of them have to do with the Sun's magnetic field. The boiling motions at the surface can create waves that travel outwards. These waves also put stresses on the magnetic fields, which then snap and release energy. This is where Iris comes in - a NASA satellite launched in 2013. It can track the flow of energy into the corona using extreme ultraviolet or x-ray observations.
