Criminals are making real money by working the unprotected gift card racks at various retailers. The criminals will take those cards, remove the things protecting the codes and repackage them. They now have the card number and the pen number for that card. Then this is where it gets diabolical. There's really inexpensive off-shelf, dirty software that criminals use to repeatedly checks every card they've entered into their database.
