What Is a Keystone Gene?

A new study shows that a Keystone gene underlies the persistence of an experimental food web. The concept has been influential at the species level, but it can also apply to lower levels of organization such as community ecology. Bob Payne's experiment originally showed that sea stars and intertidal communities function as a Keystone species.
