A lot of people spend their time studying scripture, and they become experts at scripture and what’s involved in scripture. Some even get to the point where they memorize scripture and can repeat the words in the books. However, those words have to be applied. Those words have to be used for some end. Even though those words of their own are holy, that holiness has to be taken and used by humanity somehow.
Some people use those words to help them study themselves and to find out about themselves and to understand themselves. So, the study of scripture for those people transmutes into a study of themselves because it’s in the self that you find the truths that the scripture talks about, you find the truths that the holy books talk about. Because what is it that the holy books talk about? They talk about the relationship between you and Allah. They talk about the relationship between you and God. And if that isn’t the point of what you’re studying, then what is it that you’re studying?
