When the state or when privately held interests can effectively dictate what is in one's information environment, they can do a whole range of things from manufacturing consent to changing how people think and behave. I'm sort of grappling with the same kind of issues that you are here. It takes an order of magnitude more energy to dispel bullshit than it does to create it.
