Following the untimely death of constantius, the tetrarchy will revert back to a model where one augustus galerius was clearly senior to his colleagues. The system went ahead and collapsed. It is then really hard not to come to the conclusion that the tetrarch didn't just need a senior augustus. It needed diocletian. He was the quintesential element, the ether within which the tetrarchs swam. So getting back to the matter at hand, the trick was getting maximian on board. And when the time came, he did what so few men in his place could have done, and what he himself so did not want
