People in the New Guinea Highlands were getting more efficient at this kind of shifting cultivation. Tarot and yams are both cultivated for their tubers or corns, which grew underground rather than above ground. Bananas spread best by transplanting seedlings as well. It's just that based on what we see in the archaeology, there's basically no way to tell between intentional cultivation and just creating a clearing-like environment for wild plants.
