I think you have to be careful to separate sort of larger American history. and this particular moment, because this particular moment looks very much like the 1850s. You increasingly radicalize a population by taking away their power, destabilizing them, cutting down their access to information and turning them against an enemy. And that's a very specific moment that we're in right now; it doesn't necessarily look like the 1870s or the 1970s.
