consciousness is epi phenomenal, that it's its ta side effect of the stuff that the brain evolved to do. But suppose, i think, you can dissociate intelligence and consciousness. Youare still highly conscious, yet sitting there, there's no processing going on in your brain of any conventional sort. There's no informationbut you're highly conscious. So in that sense, conscience doesn't have an adaptive function. Brains are highly non linear. They evolve. Now, given evolution of systems of this very complex, highly non linear system, it follows from that these systems will be conscious. But they didn't evolve to maximi the consciousness.
