If you were to bring out plain boiled potatoes, they would say, no, we're good. We don't need to eat this. We have enough energy. But if you bring out the pecan pie or the cookies or the brownies or the ice cream, then you're kicking in a different brain system. And that brain system doesn't really care about the fact that you have sufficient energy. That brain system cares about the very seductive food in front of you. In other words, the food that the brain implicitly values because of its physical, chemical properties. It's going to motivate you to eat that thing, even though you don't need energy.
